Last week I spent a few hours exploring and thought I'd share some of my pictures with you all.
I am so in love with this place already. It is beautiful, fun, vibrant, dynamic and a bunch of other adjectives that are going to seem trite if I list them all. The downtown area is really one of the best I've been in. It is very clean, both local and tourist friendly and idiosyncratic. Last week I spent a few hours exploring and thought I'd share some of my pictures with you all. I'm sure everyone gets sick of seeing pictures of this sign- the market is one of the most recognizable things about downtown- so I doctored it a bit. I just loved the blue sky/white umbrellas combination, so I had to include it. This is Maximus Minimus. He is run by one of the owners of a local cheese shop within the market and serves up amazing pork sandwiches. It was definitely worth the wait. If you happen to stop by Seattle and find yourself at 2nd and Pike, I recommend queuing up for this meal-on-wheels. I just had to share this little guy with you because he is a part of something that it quintessentially Seattle- the gum wall. Located in Post Alley near the Market, there is an expanse of brick wall entirely sheathed in chewing gum. It is gross. You want to stand far away from it and yet, its sheer weirdness draws you closer. And then you find awesome things like the above. People take their art seriously, even if it is a grotesque form of graffiti. Just to give everyone an idea of what I mean. This is maybe one-third of the actual length of the wall.

Seattle. Before my little stint in Oxford, Seattle was hardly what I considered a 'big city.' I had never been there, met few people who were from there, heard little about it and generally just didn't acknowledge its existence. Post-Oxford, however, I thought about Seattle a lot. For you see, I had met a few extraordinary people from the Northwest who all raved about the place. Coffee, melancholy weather, food, farmer's markets... it sounded perfect. So a friend and I decided on what was clearly more than a whim to uproot ourselves to Seattle after we graduated. I'm now graduated and successfully (...) transplanted in Seattle. I have one room of a charming house in Capitol Hill. It is within walking distance of coffee shops, a beautiful park, and possibly a Trader Joe's. Oh, I know the Trader Joe's is there and less than a mile away. But my previous ignorance of the city's topography had the hills come as a surprise, and the route to Trader Joe's requires a steep little hike. I moved here without a job all lined up. Security is overrated. I've spent the last week sending out applications and doing my best to preserve my bank account in case the worst happens and I can't find gainful employment. That being said, much of my time has been spent within the same small radius. Gas is expensive and I somehow manage to travel during weird peak-driving hours. The stop-and-go is really destroying my MPG average.
But I have plans. Oh such plans. The adventures that shall ensue once I have paychecks will be perfect blog fodder. So prepare yourselves to be jealous and pray I get a job soon. |
